Vergennes is a village in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 491 at the 2000 census. On February 28th, 2017, a strong tornado, possibly the same as the one that struck Perryville, Missouri, narrowly missed the center of town, though no fatalities occurred.Vergennes is located at 37°54′11″N 89°20′24″W / 37.90306°N 89.34000°W / 37.90306; -89.34000.According to the 2010 census, Vergennes has a total area of 0.352 square miles, of which 0.35 square miles is land and 0.002 square miles is water.As of the census of 2000, there were 491 people, 120 households, and 93 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,357.6 people per square mile. There were 127 housing units at an average density of 351.2 per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 73.32% White, 22.40% African American, 1.22% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 1.22% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.28% of the population.
