Why Decluttering Helps Buyers See Your Home Differently

When I tell a seller we need to declutter before putting their home on the market, I'm not saying:

“Your house is messy.”

I'm saying:

“We need buyers to see the HOUSE instead of everything that's inside it.”

There's a big difference.

You live in your home.

You have furniture, family photos, kitchen appliances, decorations, collections, toys, paperwork and everything else that comes with everyday life.

That's completely normal.

But when we're preparing a home for sale, we're no longer looking at it strictly as your home.

We're preparing it as a product for the market.

And one of the simplest and least expensive ways to improve how a home shows is to remove some of the stuff.

Decluttering Can Make Rooms Feel Larger

Furniture takes up visual space.

So do decorations.

So does everything sitting on countertops, tables and shelves.

When a room contains too much, buyers may perceive it as smaller than it actually is.

Imagine a bedroom with:

A bed.

Two nightstands.

Two dressers.

A chair.

A desk.

A bookshelf.

Several baskets.

And decorations everywhere.

The buyer may think:

“This bedroom is really small.”
